Tiger a Feral Cat Rescue

Benton Street on the way to Cat World

On my trip to Kanab in June, I had a lovely dinner with friends – both human and feline! One of my dining companions knows so much about the cats at Best Friends and we have great discussions about the cats.

Knowing my interest in Tiger, we began discussing his weight problem and his social issues. Robin and I commented that his woes seemed all the more magnified since he was scarred from being abandoned by his family.

“Tiger wasn’t abandoned by a family.”

“Yes he was. That’s what it says on his intake paperwork.”

“No, Tiger was a feral cat rescue.”

And then we learned Tiger’s true story…

Tiger was born in a feral cat community. He lived there with his sister and mother and of course other feral, stray and abandoned cats and kittens.

The caregiver of the community said that Tiger was one of the more social kitties. He would come up to her and rub her legs at feeding time and would let her pet him.

For a reason I do not know, the cat community was no longer a viable option for Tiger and his family and they were rescued by Best Friends. Yes, Tiger was brought to Best Friends along with his mother and sister.

According to the cat care givers at Mondrian’s where they lived, Tiger’s mother and sister were very unsocial. Although Tiger was fearful, he was more approachable than them.

Tiger made fast friends with one of the other cats and they were inseparable…until Tiger’s weight became an issue and he was moved up to Rescue Village.

Tiger a Cat Rescued II

Tiger an obese cat at 24.05 pounds

Being moved to Rescue Village confused and frightened Tiger. Tiger is one of those cats who does not adapt well to a new environment readily.

He was separated from his feline friends who he had known for many years. He had new caregivers. And, he was fed unfamiliar food.

Many cats love variety in their food. My own cats revolt if I don’t vary what I feed them. But, I was reading an article the other day that said that if a cat is fed just dry food from the time they are a kitten, they will frequently not adapt well to new food and will not even care about canned wet food. It seems that Tiger may be such a cat.

He turned his nose up at the canned food. His new caregivers thought maybe he ate just a little of it overnight, but they couldn’t be sure.

He didn’t seem to care that much for the dry R/D either. He would nibble at it, but he did not eat the entire portion he was fed.

With the worry of hepatic lipidosis, it was decided to ignore Tiger’s diet plan for the time being and he was allowed to free feed until he was eating ‘normally’ again.

Although Tiger has never become a wet food fan, he did regain his appetite and is a dry food lover. His diet plan went out the window and one year later in January 2010, Tiger weighed in at 24.05 pounds – a gain of 1.05 pounds since his move to Rescue Village.

Tiger a Cat Rescued I

Tiger's Closeup

Tiger arrived at Best Friend’s Animal Sanctuary on October 26, 2003. The reason cited on his intake paperwork is that his family was moving and they would not or could not take him with them.

It made us all sad to think of a loving family abandoning him. We know how traumatic that is for a cat and how stressed they become losing all that is familiar and being released into a feline dormitory.

Upon his arrival, Tiger weighed 15lbs 3oz. Of course I have no idea how accurate the story I was told is, but I tell it here in good faith that if not the truth, it is very near it.

Once released into his dormitory, Tiger took to the rafters. The caregivers would get a glimpse of him now and then, but he was one of those cats that hid very well.

One day in December 2008, a caregiver got a really good look at Tiger and was shocked at his size. He hadn’t been seen by a vet since March 2004 and in the interim had packed on the pounds.

Tiger was scheduled for an exam and his weigh in was 23lbs, officially an obese cat!

It was decided that something had to be done to reduce his weight and get him back on track to good health. A plan was made and Tiger was moved up to Rescue Village in January 2009 for close food intake monitoring, accompanied by a diet regiment:

Food: Hill’s Prescription Diet R/D Wet – .75 cans/day, Dry – .75 cups/day
Ideal Weight = 15lbs
Target Weight = 20lbs

But, Tiger had other plans…to be continued

Tiger’s Cat Eyes

Golden Tiger statue

Tiger’s eye (also Tigers eye, Tiger eye) is a chatoyant gemstone that is usually yellow to red-brown. It is traditionally cut in a rounded shape and has a silky luster that reflects light. It is believed by some that it is imbued with the power to help broaden one’s vision.

From the start, Tiger’s eyes have fascinated me. They are almond shaped and one can sense the royalty of the ancient Egyptian felines that is a part of his ancestry.

My sister, who was quite a bit older than I, used to delight in giving me unusual gifts. One of the gifts she gave me when I was a young teen was a statue of a golden tabby cat with almond shaped eyes.

I know that it is a reproduction of an ancient cat statue, but sadly I have no idea on what it is based.

For me, it represents Tiger in color and with its slightly rotund figure and almond shaped eyes.

The statue resides on a shelf across the room. Even as I type this, I can glance up and look directly at it. And it makes me feel as if I am connected to Tiger despite all the miles that separate us.

I am contemplating buying a tigers eye puff heart gemstone to leave with him so he’ll have something to look at and feel my love for him.

P.S. Knowing how upset I was at having to say goodbye to Tiger, Robin texted me this message while I was driving back to San Diego, “Tiger says not to worry. He knows he is loved and will be fine until you come back.”

The Tiger

The Tiger

When Tiger finally turned around and I got a good look at him, I was reminded of The Tiger, a poem by William Blake.

While in college, I was given a copy of Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Experience and I was quickly drawn to The Tiger (originally known as The Tyger).

Perhaps it was because I have loved cats my entire life or maybe it was a premonition of the day that this special Tiger cat would enter my life.

Either way, I tend to recite the poem to Tiger whenever we are together. I hope that from it he will gain courage and realize his inner strength and beauty. (I already tell him how handsome he is on the outside!)

The Tiger

Tiger Tiger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night :
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder, & what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain,
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears
And water’d heaven with their tears :
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

Tiger’s Cat Behaviors

Tiger's cat behaviors

Tiger

A cats behavior tells you a lot about them and this was certainly true for Tiger the day I met him.

When I first saw Tiger he was sleeping with his back to the room on a big round bed on top of a carrier on the table in the Kit Kat Club.

“Who is that?” I asked Robin, the cat caregiver.

“That’s Tiger. He was brought up here so we could monitor his food intake.”

“He is really a big cat.”

I went over to say hello to Tiger and as I approached him, he cringed in that scared cat way. When a cat is scared, the feline behavior signs include half shutting their eyes, hunching their shoulders and freezing. This behavior in a cat is called “frozen kitty”.

My immediate thought was that he had been abused in the past.

The fact that he didn’t run showed me that although he wasn’t totally social, he did trust humans to a certain extent.

“Is he pettable?”

“Oh sure, he is just a little shy, aren’t you Tiger tutu?” Robin answered, calling over to him.

I approached Tiger slowly, talking softly to him. As my hand stroked his back, he buried his head in the bed and shuddered. But, after a few pets, he began to purr.

His deep rumble of a purr tugged at my heart and thus began our journey.
